The moon has always been a source of wonder.
It lights up the night, influences the tides, and marks the passage of time.
But beyond its natural beauty, the Bible speaks about the moon in a deeper way, especially in connection with the last days.
Throughout Scripture, the moon is mentioned as a sign of important events, and in the end times, the Bible describes some dramatic changes involving the moon.
What do these changes mean?
Are they symbolic, or do they refer to real cosmic events?
Let’s explore what the Bible says about the moon in the last days and how it fits into God’s plan for the world.
The Moon as a Sign in the Heavens
From the very beginning, the Bible teaches that God placed the moon in the sky with a purpose.
Genesis 1:14-16 says,
And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night.
And let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.
And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth.
And it was so.
And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night.
This passage makes it clear that the moon is not just there for light—it is also meant to be a sign.
Throughout history, the moon has been used to mark time, seasons, and even prophetic events.
In the last days, the Bible says the moon will take on an even greater role as a warning to the world.
The Moon Turning to Blood
One of the most striking prophecies about the moon in the last days is that it will turn to blood.
Joel 2:30-31 says,
And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.
This prophecy is repeated in Acts 2:20, where Peter confirms that these signs will take place before the day of the Lord.
Revelation 6:12 describes the same event, saying,
And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood.
Many believe this refers to a lunar eclipse, where the moon appears red due to how light filters through the earth’s atmosphere.
But because this event is mentioned along with earthquakes and the darkening of the sun, it may be something much more dramatic.
Whatever the cause, the Bible makes it clear that a blood-red moon will be a sign that the world is entering a time of great judgment.
The Moon Going Dark
In addition to turning red, the Bible also speaks about a time when the moon will completely stop giving its light.
Matthew 24:29 says,
Immediately after the distress of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.
Isaiah 13:10 gives a similar warning, saying,
For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
These passages describe a time when the moon will no longer reflect light, possibly due to thick clouds, smoke, or other catastrophic events.
Some believe this could be caused by volcanic eruptions, nuclear war, or supernatural intervention.
Whatever the reason, it will be a terrifying sign that something major is happening in the heavens and on the earth.
The Moon and End-Times Judgment
The book of Revelation describes the moon as being directly affected by God’s judgment.
Revelation 8:12 says,
And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
This suggests that during the end times, the light of the moon, sun, and stars will be diminished as part of God’s wrath upon the world.
In Revelation 21:23, the Bible describes the new heaven and new earth, saying,
And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
This means that in eternity, the moon will no longer be needed because God Himself will provide all the light His people require.
Have Blood Moons Already Happened?
In recent years, many have speculated about blood moons as possible fulfillments of biblical prophecy.
There have been several lunar eclipses in modern history, some of which have coincided with Jewish feast days.
For example, in 2014 and 2015, there were four blood moons that fell on Passover and the Feast of Tabernacles.
Some saw this as a possible sign of major events in God’s plan.
While these occurrences are interesting, the Bible does not say that every blood moon is a prophetic sign.
However, they do remind believers that God is in control of the heavens and that His Word will come to pass.
How Should Christians Respond?
The Bible makes it clear that the moon will play a major role in the last days, but it does not tell us exactly when these events will happen.
Instead of trying to predict specific dates, believers are called to be spiritually prepared.
Jesus gave this warning in Luke 21:25-28,
There shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring.
Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
This passage reminds believers that when they see these signs, including changes in the moon, they should not be afraid but should be filled with hope.
Jesus is coming soon, and these signs are reminders to stay faithful and watchful.
Final Thoughts
The Bible teaches that the moon is more than just a light in the night sky.
It is a sign of God’s timing, His judgment, and His return.
In the last days, the moon will turn to blood, go dark, and be affected by cosmic events.
These changes will serve as warnings that the return of Christ is near.
While no one knows exactly when these events will happen, believers can take comfort in knowing that God’s plan is unfolding exactly as He has promised.
Instead of living in fear, Christians are called to live in readiness, faith, and obedience.
The next time you look at the moon, remember that it is part of God’s design—a reminder that He is in control and that His return is drawing closer.
So keep your eyes on the sky, but most importantly, keep your heart prepared.
The moon is a sign, but Jesus is the Savior who will return to make all things new.
